150 Years of Advocacy, Compassion, and Leadership
This year, Schuyler Center is celebrating the 150th anniversary of our founding by Louisa Lee Schuyler in 1872.  Today, our work remains grounded in her ideals of compassion, advocacy, leadership, and partnership.

When Louisa founded the State Charities Aid Association (which became Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy in 2000, in Louisa’s honor), her goal was to improve the wellbeing of people living in state institutions due to poverty. She witnessed firsthand the inhumane conditions in state institutions, insisted that others saw as well, and – based on those experiences – raised her voice for change. She achieved her goal through partnership with “like-minded friends” and advocating for state laws that centered those in need.

In doing so, she set the course for the next 150 years of SCAA advocacy rooted in compassion, evidence, and belief in a government that works for the greater good.

Today’s SCAA lives out Louisa’s vision of advocating for lasting change on behalf of those impacted by poverty, especially children and families.

This isn’t a solitary fight – the Schuyler Center’s mission relies on collective action. Like Louisa, who gathered like-minded friends and people in every community across New York State to push for better care of New Yorkers living in poverty, the Schuyler Center remains rooted in partnership.

Together in partnership with advocates and service providers, state agencies, legislators, donors, and our own like-minded friends, we continue the fight for a New York in which everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
