Pediatricians Release Strong Statement On Negative Health Impact of Racism

Racism is a social determinant of health and has a profound influence on the mental and physical health of children, adolescents, and families. According to a new policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics, Racism and its Impact on Child and Adolescent Health, today’s children, adolescents, and emerging adults are increasingly diverse and strategies that incorporate ethnicity, culture, and circumstance are critical to achieving a reduction in health disparities. Research makes it clear that racism has negative effects on health and well-being through implicit and explicit biases, institutional structures, and interpersonal relationships. The nation’s esteemed body of pediatricians recommends ways to address and ameliorate the effects of racism on children and teens, encouraging pediatricians to create welcoming, culturally competent medical practices, advocate for policies that advance social justice, and engage leaders in their communities to reduce health disparities.
