On May 11, 1872, Louisa Lee Schuyler founded the State Charities Aid Association (SCAA) determined to advocate for a government that functioned well for everyone.
A great granddaughter of both General Philip Schuyler and of Alexander Hamilton, Louisa used her social standing and keen organizational skills to transform government’s treatment of those who had been pushed to the margins: people living in poverty and those impacted by mental illness and disability.
Louisa was a changemaker, a visionary, and a trailblazer.
Her legacy is one of social justice infused with hope, optimism, and a belief in change through service. How incredible that these themes run through the Schuyler Center’s work today.
150 years later, we continue to build on Louisa’s vision.
Every day, the Schuyler Center team diligently advocates for proven public policies that center the most disadvantaged New Yorkers.
And our voice is heard.
Schuyler Center’s advocacy has resulted in decades of transformational change through policies that improve health, welfare, and human services for all New Yorkers, especially children and families impacted by poverty.
On May 11, 2022, we will gather to honor Louisa Lee Schuyler’s legacy and harness the momentum of this moment to work toward a more equitable New York State.
