This year’s legislative session began with much discussion about poverty, but as the NYS 2015-16 budget negotiations closed, with little serious investment in low-income children and families, it is hard to find evidence of our state’s commitment to alleviating burdens on low-income families. Schuyler Center’s Last Look, the third in our analyses of the 2015-16 NYS budget process, is an initial assessment of New York State’s 2015-16 Final Budget and how it intersects with our policy priorities. The Last Look examines the budget’s impact on the health and well-being of all New Yorkers, especially those living in poverty. Schuyler Center staff will spend the coming days gaining a deeper understanding of the final budget and its impacts.

Children with dental insurance receive more preventive services and pay lower out-of-pocket costs for care, but not all children have access to affordable coverage. Closing the Coverage Gap: Achieving Universal Dental Coverage for Children outlines an option to expand access to affordable dental coverage for all children in NYS.
