The NYS Budget deadline of April 1 has passed without a state budget, as it has in recent years. While the Governor, Senate Majority Leader, and Assembly Speaker negotiate the final budget, Schuyler Center’s team is continuing to advocate for evidence-based investments in New York’s children and families – especially those earning low incomes. New Yorkers need these investments more than ever amid an unstable Federal landscape.
- We are calling for an expanded and robust child tax credit that meets the recommendations of the Child Poverty Reduction Advisory Council.
- We are advocating for community investment and support through the Child and Family Wellbeing Fund.
- We are speaking out for child care assistance and investment in the child care workforce.
There’s still time to take action! Read on to learn how you can add your voice to these budget priorities for New York’s children and families.
Child Poverty
In order for New York State to achieve its goal of cutting child poverty in half by 2031, the state budget needs to include a significant expansion of the Empire State Child Credit. The New York Can End Child Poverty coalition is calling on the Governor to implement the Child Poverty Reduction Advisory Council’s Recommendations to help us achieve this goal.

Child Care
The Empire State Campaign for Child Care has shared an urgent message: Tens of thousands of New York families are at risk of losing child care assistance as soon as next month. Legislators must make an immediate investment for child care assistance in the fiscal year 2026 budget.
Take action by:
- Sending a letter to your legislators and Governor Hochul urging New York State to invest in child care and the workforce.
- Write a Letter to the Editor (LTE) of your local paper advocating and informing community members about the urgent need for funding for child care assistance and the child care workforce.
- Use our social media toolkit to urge Governor Hochul and legislators to fund child care now!

Child Welfare
The Child and Family Wellbeing Fund is one of Schuyler Center’s top priorities because it would make state resources available to trusted local organizations, run by community members in the neighborhoods all over New York State experiencing the most Child Protective Services (CPS) involvement. This Fund would prioritize family and community leadership in disbursing state funds.
- Send a letter to legislators urging them to include budget actions to support youth and families involved in the child welfare system.

Medicaid
The new administration in Washington and some members of Congress have proposed drastic changes to the Medicaid program. Consumer advocates and others believe Medicaid block grants, per-capita caps, work requirements and changes to the federal financial commitment provided to states would be devastating to state Medicaid programs, Medicaid consumers, and the safety-net providers that serve them.
Medicaid Matters New York has produced a series of 26 Medicaid fact sheets by Congressional district to highlight the importance of Medicaid to New Yorkers and the impact cuts would have in each district.
- Find your district’s fact sheet to share with community members and your Representative.
- Fill out this form to send a message to your member of Congress and our U.S. Senators to remind them that Medicaid matters to New Yorkers!
